Throughout your examination, in addition to checking for dental decay, infections and gum disease, Dr Khan will also check your mouth for any signs of other serious conditions such as oral cancer. We will discuss your medical history and determine if this affects your dental treatment. Often we will take X-rays which allow us to further check your teeth and monitor any issues such as wisdom teeth. If we identify an oral health problems, we take time to explain our findings and our recommended treatments. Then we’ll proceed with a thorough scale and polish.
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a slowly progressing degradation of the tissues that support teeth. With inadequate oral hygiene measures, inflammation in the gums exhibits itself as gingivitis. If this is not rectified with an improvement in brushing and flossing, then gingivitis can progress into periodontal disease. Smokers and patient’s with certain medical conditions such as diabetes are predisposed to having this periodontal disease. The bone and gums deteriorate around the teeth, which eventually become loose and require extraction.
Although periodontal disease cannot be reversed, it’s progression can be stopped with regular maintenance visits with Dr Khan as well as optimal oral hygiene measures at home. Periodontal disease is a slow process that can take 20 years to manifest as loose teeth. Because of this it is important that it is identified early so it can be controlled.
Bringing your children to the dentist while they are young is important so that they can acclimatise to the dental setting. Oral health is monitored at every visit and a strong focus is placed on your child’s diet as well as their oral hygiene routine at home. Regular visits can also help to prevent tooth decay. Regular visits from a young age also enable us to detect the presence of any problems in dento-facial growth.
